Present yourself to the readers

My name is Ati EDGE, I am the guitarist of Hungarian vintage punk rock and roll / punkabilly band named The Silver Shine.

Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?

We are a three-piece band and I wrote most of the songs what we have. First we write some lines for the lyrics, then write the guitar. We go down to the practice room and continue with drums and bass and at the end we write the vocal parts. We started the band in 2004 and since then we released 9 albums. Our last album “Hold Fast” just came out some weeks ago by Wolverine Records. It contains 11 songs. Just originals and there is no cover song on this album. If I remember well we wrote about 30 songs and then reduced to 20, demoed the best 15 songs and finally recorded only the 12 best songs, but at the end we decided to use only 11 for the album.

Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?

I wrote all our old songs by myself but on our last album, our upright bassist girl, Krista helped me in song writing. On our first 3-4 albums we wrote a lot of horror, psycho related songs but we realized we like to sing more about feelings what touch us personally, so by the time that horror/psycho thing had getting out slowly from our lyrics. Inspiration comes from our life and feelings.

Why the name THE SILVER SHINE ?

We wanted to have a not so usual name. If you keep a silver jewel in your hand you realize the shine of it first and you have to survey to jevel itself. Just like if you see some words, or text first you have to read between lines and find the message.

What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?

Our musical taste is pretty wide. We like good old punk rock from the 70's/80's like Ramones, Joan Jett, Social Distortion, Blondie, Bad Religion, etc. Good rock and roll bands like Motorhead, Peter Pan Speedrock, Supersuckers, etc. New punk bands like Rise Against, Rancid, Reno Divorce, Anti-Flag, The Bones, Offspring, Pennywise, Distillers, etc. Old 50's country heroes like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, etc. Old 50's rockabilly heroes like Joe Clay, Bobby Roberts, etc. 60's rhythm and blues like Ray Charles, Etta James, etc. Blues heroes like Tom Waits, Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, etc. Old 70's rock heroes like Janis Joplin, Bad Company, etc. Some hardcore bands like Blood For Blood, Death By Stereo, etc. Psycho bands like The Meteors, Koffin Kats, Reverend Horton Heat, Living End, Nekromantix, etc. the list is kinda endless :)

What's your opinion about the current music scene in Hungary ?

Well, Hungary is very small country and the music scene here is concentrating to the capital, Budapest. There are some really good clubs here like A38, Dürer Kert, etc. and we have some huge Summer festivals like Sziget, Volt, etc. Personally I would be happy to see more rock bands headling these festivals. I am not happy to see headliners like David Guetta on festivals which started as “rock festivals”.

Generally, what's the reaction of the public during your concerts ?

Some people come to our shows and sing our songs in the first lines other people are dancing, head banging (hehehe).... just like a normal rock gig. Nothing special :)

What's your best live memory ? And why ?

We have tons of good memories so it will be hard to choose the best one. Well, we had been touring in Brazil for 2 weeks about 6 years ago and there was a show where some fans started kissing Krista's foot during she played upright bass on stage. It was very hard to play the guitars for me because I laughed so loud :)

What would be the festival of your dreams ?(with you playing in it of course !!!)

Uhhh, another good question, hehehehe... I guess Social Distortion, Motorhead, Tom Waits, Ramones, Joan Jett, Bo Diddley, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, Blood For Blood definitely would play on my dream festival!

What are your future dates ?

We will have an album release tour in May for 3-4 weeks. We will have shows on the tour in Spain, Slovenia, France, Germany and Switzerland for sure and our booking agents are working on some more countries as well. We will back home and we will play at the biggest Hungarian biker meeting organized by Harley Davidson on the 11th June. After it we will play on some good festivals here in Hungary and abroad like Riedfest Open Air in Germany.

The Silver Shine

In studio, what was the ambiance for the album HOLD FAST ?...etc.…and why this title ?

Well, we had hard time to record this album. Our drummer just left the band in last August and we went to studio without drummer. Fortunately I had been playing drums in a hardcore band from 2000-2006 and I sat back on the drum chair to record this album. The title “Hold Fast” is a kinda summary of the messages of the songs on the album: the world is going crazy around us and we must keep on doing our best during these hard times.

How does it work for the design of the CD ?

I started to play about 20 years ago in bands and at the beginning I always had to ask favor from our friends to help to do the cassette, CD lay-out and album designs. After a couple of cassette designs I bought a computer and decided to do it myslef. Since then I made most of our designs, logos, album artworks, etc. so it took about 2-3 weeks now to do my best. There were about 20 other plans for the front cover of “Hold Fast”and we choose this one. Krista holds my Gretsch guitar in her hand in Las Vegas, Fremont Street, where we played some years ago. Just a simple design, nothing fancy :)

Did you find a label ? If yes, how do you made the research ?

The album came out by Wolverine Records on March 11. as vinyl LP, digipak CD and digital download album. Wolverine Records is a good international label based in Germany. They release mostly punk rock and psychobilly albums. Our “In The Middle of Nowhere” album came out by Wolverine 3 years ago and they put out some split vinyl records during the last years. So we worked with them before and I am sure we will work together with them in the future on the next records also!

With Management and booking, how do you work ? And with whom ?

Well, Torpedo Booking Agency books our shows in Europe, Naked Betty Booking in USA, Whiskey Rock And Roll Alicante in Spain and we have a booking agent, Attila Gorogh in Hungary. We are a self-managing band.

What are your projects ?

I have a solo project named Ati EDGE and the Shadowbirds. It's a garage rockabilly trio and my second solo album came out last year by Rhythm Bomb Records titled « Old Cars, Tattoos, Bad Girls and Wild Guitars »

What do you expect from the future ?

I just would like to continue recording albums, playing gigs in the future... nothing fancy or unreachable, just keep on rocking!

What's your motto ?

I guess after this new record my new motto is « Hold Fast ! Save your day ! »

Keep on listening rock music, buying records and keep on going to live shows to support the bands.... rock and roll can survive only this way with your help!

Go to live shows and support the bands!
