Turnip is a heavy blues/psych power trio from San Antonio, Texas.
Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?
We don’t really have a set way of writing. Anyone can come in with a riff, or an idea, and if it works we just go with it. A lot of our songs are written within the first 5 minutes of a practice session. We just pick up our instruments and start playing, and a few minutes later, we have a new song. The ease in which we write is a double edged sword. We have about 5 albums worth of material that we’re just sitting on, and probably another 5 albums that we’ve forgotten about.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?
We collaborate on lyrics. Window Killer speaks a lot about our internal fears and desires, and our inability to escape them. We have a wide range of inspirations, mostly non-musical. H.P. Lovecraft, David Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Stephen King, etc.
Why the name TURNIP ?
Because it’s absurd. It’s impossible to make a connection between our name and music without a reference, and we like the idea of that. We don’t give a shit about making you think. We aren’t that pretentious. We just like creating parallels that have no logical conclusion. At the end of the day, it’s just funny.
What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?
This one is always tough to answer. It’s so dynamic that it’s almost impossible to pin down. I’ll just say that lately we’ve been really digging Argent – In Deep, Kadavar, and Black Heat – Self Titled.
Generally, what's the reaction of the public during your concerts ?
When people first see us, there is an evolution that takes place. Our line-up is pretty unique, so our sound isn’t easy to predict. We’ve got the slide guitar, lead guitar that splits to a bass amp, and drums. No bass. You can see the curiosity on people’s faces as we are setting up. Most of the time, the sound guy doesn’t even know what the hell we are trying to do. Once we start playing, it all comes together for people. We are fairly accessible. Our music is simple, and easy for most people to understand and tap their foot to. People genuinely like us. We’ve all been in other bands, where that’s not always the case, so it’s easy to see through the difference between a real fan, and someone just giving you lip service about your “sound”.
What's your best live memory ? And why ?
This would have to be the time we drove to Austin for a show, unpacked, set up, and realized that we forgot to bring the cymbals. We felt pretty bad about it, but shit happens. Now we have a good laugh every time we are loading up for a gig.
What would be the festival of your dreams ?(with you playing in it of course !!!)
Festivals are overrated. We’d much rather play to a room of 200 people, who really wanted to hear our music, than to thousands who are just waiting for you to get off the stage so they can see the headliner. It’s just a matter of perspective, and where we are as a band. I’m sure it’s different if you are the headliner everybody paid to see.
