Present yourself to the readers

Hello everyone thanks for reading! We are Ego Eris, a postpunk/darkwave band from Recife, Brazil, officially debuted in November 2016. I’m Marc Nero, Ego Eris’ guitarist.

Hey everyone, I’m Astroblack, bassist.

Breno Romero, vocalist.

What’s the story for MEMENTO MORI ?

Well, everything started with the invitation from our label, Deepland Records, to join their ranks, after a nice reception by the public of our debut EP, Nocturnal. I was already familiar with their work and listened to the label owner’s band, Das Projekt, since I was a teenager, so I was delighted with the opportunity, and we started developing the concept for a new album. We already had a few songs ready and the ephemerality of life was always a subject of interest among us, so it all came together very naturally, really.

Why the name EGO ERIS ?

The name comes from a saying in latin which is “Tu Fui, Ego Eris”, and means something like "What You Are, I Was. What I Am, You Will Be". It is sometimes found in epitaphs, and is a grim reminder for the living that the dead were once alive, and they will someday be dead as well.

What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?

I’d say I’m mostly influenced by Postpunk, old Visual Kei and dark/coldwave music scenes, but that alone would be an understatement, since I also listen to a lot of mainstream and even outright bizarre stuff. My favorite bands right now are Malice Mizer, She Past Away, Interpol, Lebanon Hanover, Buck-Tick, Plastique Noir and Ritual Howls, and David Bowie represents absolute perfection for me.

I’m mainly inspired by bands like Information Society, Depeche Mode, The Frozen Autumn, Joy Division, She Past Away, The Sisters of Mercy and Frozen Plasma.

I have a wide range of musical influences, I’m always trying to absorb what I consider interesting in every culture, but I’m enamored with Malice Mizer, Michael Jackson and David Bowie. I love the communicative potential of these artists and how they moved with passion in what they did.

In studio, what was the atmosphere for the album MEMENTO MORI ?...etc.…

Despite the fact that our music is sometimes very dark and some songs mess with really personal stuff, the atmosphere was actually very lighthearted during the recording sessions. The thing is, we’re a bunch of sixth graders when it comes to sense of humor, so it was only a matter of a comment with involuntary sexual connotation for everyone to start laughing. Also, our producer’s studio was really far from our houses, so we had long car rides to discuss every detail of every session, and since the three of us, as well as the producer, were so focused in getting the best of our songs, it was a really passionate work.

It was a wonderful experience, with a lot of personal learning too. I needed to decipher and change my point of view on music so I could achieve an enjoyable result.

How does it work for the great design of the CD ? and why this title ?

The graphic project for the CD was made by the amazingly talented Henrique Kipper, a well-known illustrator in brazilian alternative scene. It was truly an honor for us to work with him. As for the title, we thought that it fits the whole “Tu Fui, Ego Eris” theme, with the opening track, Memento, having a somewhat motivational message, and ending with Mori, which is kind of a requiem, and everything else in between.

How was the shooting of the clip NOCTURNAL ? and why this choice ?

It was an amazing experience, we carefully chose the place and the scenario to provide us the necessary energy to live that moment. Some days before the shooting, my mother told me about an abandoned building a few kilometers from here, and we finally had the perfect spot. We spent almost a full day exploring that huge place where we got the needed elements for the clip atmosphere.

It was quite surprising. I didn’t know exactly how to work in a videoclip. We had a story and, even with low budget, we managed to present it with a very beautiful aesthetic. It is a unique work, at least in our hometown.

The whole experience was great! We were lucky to assemble an awesome team to work with us, so the entire process was very well-conducted as well as so much fun, despite the exhaustion that followed. I think we chose Nocturnal for different reasons. It was the first song made by the three of us together, and we decided it was the one that mostly represented our identity as a group, back then.

What are your projects ?

Right now, we are working hard on our second videoclip, as well doing a lot of concerts. We will also be featured in a new compilation album from our label. We are starting to work on some new songs, but it will be a little while before our next release, probably.

What do you expect from the future ?

My expectations for the future are for our band to keep evolving more and more, learning and bringing innovations for our public, always seeking to improve, adding new contents without losing our essence.

I think my biggest expectation is to be able to perform and spread our music to as many places as possible, and hopefully be able to help building good memories in people’s lives.

What I expect is for all of you to feel confortable with our music and for us to be able to meet soon. Mainly I want you to be connected with us.

What's your motto ?

You see, things never came very easily for us. We had to struggle a lot to achieve pretty much anything we’ve done so far. And sometimes, when things get complicated, Breno says “O desmantelo só presta quando é grande”, which could be translated as “the trouble is only worth it when it’s HUGE”, and for some reason, it motivates us a lot to go on and overcome the situation.

I’m currently comfortable with absorbing several kinds of challenges. I’m having to deal with overwhelming situations and lots of responsibilities, but I decided to pay the price to try and make this dream come true.
