Hi, we’re Which Witch is Which, from New Brunswick, Canada. On vocals we have Lysanne Lombard, PJ Dunphy on Guitar, Dan Cadera on bass and Nadine Paulin on drums. We’ve been together 5 years now and just put out our first album on vinyl and streaming.
Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?
Most songs start with PJ or Dan coming up with a riff they like home or at practise then we work the rest out as a band from there.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?
For this record we had the songs before Lysanne joined, so Dan wrote them. In the two years she’s been with us she’s been writing more lyrics and will probably feature more predominantly on the second LP. At the time there were a lot of long relationships coming to an end so we have a few about that. Also, the process of getting back into new relationships. Also pinball, social media, death...
Why the name WHICH WITCH IS WHICH ?
Nadine is a big Scooby Doo fan and there was an episode named “Which Witch is Which”. We all loved it and it wasn’t taken.
What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?
We have so many and I think that’s why the band works. We all love the Ramones and Motörhead. After that we start to bring different stuff to the table. Lysanne has a lot of Janis Joplin and Frank Zappa love. PJ brings riffy KISS guitar ideas, Dan is more into post punk like Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy. It all blends into something familiar but unique.
In studio, what was the atmosphere for the album W.W.I.W ?...etc.…
Recording was no problem at all, though we did go through a lot of mixes to land on one we loved. We wanted it to sound powerful, like our live shows. In the end it’s raw and heavy but we snuck in a few non-traditional punk instruments to fill it out under the mix. We’ll let people see if they can pick those out.
How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?
The cover art was done by the terrifyingly talented Justin Coffee. He does blu ray covers for italian horror movies from the 70’s. We gave him a rough sorta idea and he absolutely killed it. We all agree that if you just let a talented person do their thing without intervening, they can do their best work.
Did you find a label ? If yes, how do you made the research ?
We didn’t for two reasons. The first was that we didn’t want to delay getting the album out any longer by going through a label. The second was that we could afford to put it out ourselves because of the hard work we’d put in playing shows, selling merch etc...a lot of our friends on labels told us that if they could afford not to be on one, they would do it themselves as well. It’s a cool position to be in.
With Management and booking, how do you work ? And with whom ?
PJ is actually one of the main promoters out here on the East Coast of Canada so we’re lucky in that respect. It’s kind of an advantage we have over some other bands but you know, ya play the hand you’re dealt.
What are your projects ?
Well, promoting the album is the big thing now. Just hitting as many road dates as we can, keeping up on social media, and getting it out there as much as we can.
What do you expect from the future ?
Things are cruising along pretty good, so we’re already looking at doing a second print run with an alternate color scheme for all you that are collector types (like us). After the dust settles on that we’ll continue working on the second record, which we already have a handful of songs written for.
What's your motto ?
I don’t think we have one? We do have a philosophy to always stay cool and not get heated with one another. We may hold the world record for least internal band drama. Amazingly it’s been working because we’re all super happy with the output.
