What’s the story for MY SECOND BIRTH/MY ONLY DEATH ?
The genesis of MSBMOD has been way articulated,characterized by several mixes and masters. That's the reason why it took so much time to be released. We wanted to give fans something that sounds perfectly right to reward those who has been waiting for our coming back for so many years.
(lead guitar):I was playing with Dave and Saji in a side-project when he decided to re-form This Void Inside, so he communicated me that I would be the new guitar player of the band, then we started to choose the tracks of the album among over sixty songs witten by Dave in the past years... It was an hard work ‘cause he writes songs every single day of his life... Then Alberto (guitars) and Simone (drums) joined the band and we started the recording sessions.
Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?
I am the main author, composer and producer of all songs. Usually I write alone at my own studio and send music to my mates to get suggestions about the arrangements. Sometimes we arrange the songs together at the rehearsal room, adding some new riff or changing some parts that sound too “long-winded"
Dave is a great composer in this genre so I prefer to give suggestions on the arrangments and things like that... sometimes I write solos or additional lead parts. Mainly I like to control everything about contracts, timeline and in general in all the things concerning business, I’ve to say that this kind of work is made in an excellent way by our label Agoge Records.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?
My lyrics originate from my emotional experience. For me writing is a sort of catharsis, is like chasing away all the demons who reside in my soul. All songs talk about depression, failed love stories, negative thoughts and energies, and about a never ending death wish. It looks so strange that most of the people who knows me takes me for a cheerful person. Maybe it means that I am really good actor! LOL
Why the name THIS VOID INSIDE ?
This void inside is a state of mind. It happens every time you watch the world without those “filters” we used to call, illusions, ideologies, art, faith, love. At the very end if everyone of us remove all those “soul superstructures” from his own point of view, the perception of life suddenly turns into a “blob”, into something that makes no sense. There is no way to explain how the universe goes but fake truths that are aimed at ensuring our self deception.
What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?
I was born as a metalhead, now I listen to a lot of different things from Sisters Of Mercy to Bon Jovi, I like a lot of different stuffs: Type O Negative, The Cult, Motley Crue, Led Zeppelin, Bauhaus, Devo, Hans Zimmer, Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, London After Midnight... I could go on and on for hours...
I actually listen to everything I like and what I prefer at the moment, it depends on the mood I’m in. Obviously I must confess that 80’s music from pop to new romantic and hard rock is the one that generally mainly influences my musical taste. I adore The Beatles too.
I started to take music seriously when I was 11 after listening to an amazing album called “The final countdown “ from the swedish band Europe. From then on I saw music for the wonderful thing it really is and took the chance of becoming a musician as well. Throughout all these years I have been collecting something like 2000 cds and 500 vinyls of different kinds: from Bon Jovi to Napalm death. Actually it looks so hard to list all the bands and musicians that has been influencing me till now. I just can randomly mention some of my favorite ones but it won't ever be an exhaustive list: Europe, Him, Depeche Mode, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, To/Die/For, Apoptygma Berzerk, Saviour Machine, Mr Big, Paradise Lost, Project Hate MCMXCIX, Theater Of Tragedy, Tiketto, and many many more. One thing's for sure, I am in love with the whole Scandinavian rock scene!
I've no limits, I like to listen to every kind of music, also music genres that don't comunica te any kind of feeling. I'm inluenced for sure by the 90's, I mean the american scene from Seattle, swedish death metal, and the first wave of scandinavian black metal.
What's your best live memory ? And why ?
was a concert with my former band My Sixth Shadow, at Bolwerk (Sneek – NL). Simply it was my first live experience abroad. I realized for the first time that the international rock scene is far and away different from the Italian one. It’s so fucking vibrant and stimulating and people are so gorgeus ‘cause they are more interested in listening to original music rather than listening to tribute bands like in Italy! I felt the euphoria of being a real rock star there!
It was in 2000, when with a former band (an heavy metal act called Savers) I played as support band for R.J. Dio.
I always like to play! I love playing in front of 1000 people in the same way I play in front of 10 people!
In studio, what was the atmosphere for the album MY SECOND BIRTH/MY ONLY DEATH ?...etc.…
We all have been excited since the first day the band was re-formed! We recorded at my studio and after each single recording session we felt so thrilled more than before aware that we were experiencing something unbelievable!
We recorded in different times, during the recording sessions I prefer to work quick and do my parts as soon as possible, on the arrangments I’ve tried to add something on the lead melodies, ‘cause Dave had created very good riffs, so I’ve preferred to play note for note his ideas. Most of the guitars were recorded in the morning, so it was hard for me ‘cause a prefer to record and work in the evening or at night with a bottle or wine when it is possible.
Some good suggestions during the mixing and the mastering went from Gianmarco Bellumori (the chief of our label Agoge Records, that re-amped some guitars in his amazing “Wolf Recording Studios” near Rome) and Emiliano Rubbi (the sound engineer the mastered our album in my studio “Walla Walla Music Factory” in Rome)
How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?
The artwork has been designed with the intention of representing our rebirth. We chose that model dressed that way since we wanted to send a message to all our fans : the goddess of music, the muse gave us the chance to get back and start again. It was like we were born a second time and only death can put the end to it.
What are your projects ?
In this moment we are about to plan, together with our management, a second new video (I mean a traditional real video) to promote MSBMOD and scheduling some dates for a live tour.
What's your motto ?
Gimme a fucking beer ! LOL
Actually I don't have one or better it's not so easy to be translated into English. But we have a «motto » related to our fans : You fill this void inside !
