Hello, I’m Veronica of Death Loves Veronica, a solo project based in the United States. I would say that the style is dark electronic and fits into many genres such as dark wave, cold wave, sometimes gothic, and even post-industrial at times.

What’s the story for E.P. IN NIGHTMARES ?

In Nightmares was my second E.P. I felt like going back to my roots with a more deathrock feel in some of the songs. I had a guitarist and a bassist (Sanford Allen and Detra) come in to record on three of the tracks. It’s a very moody album. I felt a bit more secure about the music I was writing by that point, so I pushed things further than before. It wasn’t as minimal as the first album. It’s about facing fears and accepting the darker times in our past as a part of who we are so we can let go and move through pain.

Are you day or night ?

Night for sure. I stay up way too late creating and writing things. I pay for it the next day.

Why the name DEATH LOVES VERONICA ?

The name felt empowering. I think because a lot of what I write about ultimately has some theme around death, so why not embrace that as a good thing.

What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?

I’ve grown up listening to everything from Siouxsie and the Banshees to N.W.A. I have varied taste. Some key influences would have to be Joy Division, Skinny Puppy, The Dead Kennedys, and Judas Priest. I also love movie soundtracks.

In studio, what was the atmosphere for the E.P. ?...etc.…

It felt good to record music and lyrics that I wrote myself after getting positive feedback from the Vampiros Electric E.P. Before this project, I sang in a few bands and was a guest vocalist for others at times. But the projects weren’t really my own, so I felt a bit stifled. I felt less stress in the studio because I was being encouraged. It was the co-producer’s studio (Jamie Cadaver) and he made me feel good about what I was doing.

How does it work for the great design of the CD ? and why this title ?

I took that photo in a graveyard in Germany in 2018. I just thought it looked right for the cover once I looked through my photos later. I also visited Belgium on that trip and I enjoyed it very much! The title of the album reflects how I felt while growing up. Not to be overly dramatic, but it wasn’t the greatest childhood. Looking back, it really was a nightmare. But it made me who I am, and I’m really okay with that now.

How was the shooting of the clip IN NIGHTMARES ? and why this choice ?

The video footage for In Nightmares was originally from a short film I shot a few years back. When my music career rapidly began to pick up, I had to abandon the film. I pieced parts of it together to create the video since, to me, the title song had that emotional feel that the short film would have had if completed.

What are your projects ?

I’m trying to focus only on DLV for now. I do plan to write a novel again in the future, but music is where my heart is. I am at my best emotionally when composing and recording.

What do you expect from the future ?

I need to learn to pace myself and slow down. I write songs in my head all the time. I hope to continue putting out music that evolves and keeps listeners engaged, but maybe not as frequently.

What's your motto ?

I now jokingly say it’s “who cares?” but what I really mean by that is to not be so self-conscious artistically, and to do what you feel is right.
