Present yourself to the readers

Hello, I am Picture One, a one man post-punk/goth instrumental project from Atlanta, Ga USA.

What’s the story for BRIGHT SPOT AND THE MIDNIGHT SUN ?

Bright Spot and The Midnight sun is my second full-length offering. It was recorded between 2018-2019 at the Estate de Barnwell studios at my home in Atlanta. The music itself draws from some of by favorite bands- The Cure, Asylum Party, The Dance Society, The Cleaners from Venus, Little Nemo, Sisters of Mercy, etc.. It also draws heavily from film soundtracks. I wanted to create lush, chorus driven, melodic music with an emphasis of memorable themes.

Why the name PICTURE ONE ?

The name is taken from the Asylum Party record of the same name, which I consider to be one of the quintessential cold wave records of the 80’s. It was a huge inspiration for me starting this project. It was also the first vinyl reissue my label (Deanwell Global Music) ever released. So that record holds a special place in my hear for a number of reasons and seemed like an appropriate name for what I was going for with this project.

What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?

Everything across the board from soundtracks, goth, post-punk, ebm, indie, cold wave, 80’s pop, folk, punk, extreme metal, and synth music. For this project specifically, I would say bands such as Asylum Party, The Cure, Little Nemo, Wendy Carlos, Das Kabinette, Siouxsie, The Dance Society, Drab Majesty, and Black Marble to name a few.

In studio, what was the atmosphere for your new album ?...etc.…

I record every thing at the Estate de Barnwell studios at my home is Atlanta. I set it up initially for recording soundtracks, which I do regularly with my friend under the name Deaton & Barnwell. I try to treat recording as an artist might treat an art practice. I do a little, or sometimes more, every day. I just try to keep chipping away at it constantly until I have something to release. I try to always have two records in works at any given time.

How does it work for the great design of the CD ? and why this title ?

A bright spot is a magnetic anomaly that displays as “bright” on a seismograph. It often indicates a lake or body of water deep underground. It is something that geographically doesn’t make sense and only occurs in a couple places in the world. The midnight sun is something that occurs up north in areas where in the summer the sun never goes down. These two ideas elicit the kind of feelings I was exploring when writing this record- which was often late at night.
At the time I was feeling particularly offset from the world and myself, I was searching for a bright spot of sorts. Creating this music became that bright spot for me. The cover with the mirror was one of a few cover ideas I worked on my with friend. I wanted it to evoke the idea of an offset from the things around you and the idea of finding a bright spot that makes you feel normal and grounded again.

What are your projects ?

This project- Picture One. I also score films and perform under the name Deaton & Barnwell. And I also run a reissue label called Deanwell Global Music.

What do you expect from the future ?

I am currently recording a new record which is somewhat of a different direction. I consider it to be a goth pop record and it will be my first Picture One record I sing on. Kind of like a gothier Human League.
