Present yourself to the audience

Thurisaz was founded back in 1997. Back then, we released a couple of demo's under the moniker ModiliuM, which we now consider as a rather silly name;-) In 1999 we decided to enrich our sound with keyboard-arrangements, so we enrolled Kobe to join the Thurisaz-hordes. From that time on, things started to lighten up for us: we recorded our third demo-cd, won the Belgian Metal Concours and found the sound we've been searching for since the day we began. We evolved from a metalcore-alike style to the atmospheric death-black we play nowadays. Last year (2004) we recorded our debute album Scent of a Dream and the reactions we had were truly amazing!!! All reviews were extremely positive, and also the international press seemed to appreciate our music a lot. For the moment we're working on some new songs for our second album that should be released by the end of 2006.

What musicstyle do you prefer personaly and what are your influences ?

I think it's not an easy task to determine what style of music we play or to compare us with other bands, 'cause our style is very diverse. We never stick to one subgenre, but always tried to mix those parts of different styles we liked ourselves and in that way I think we created our own style. But we do have our influences of course, from which bands as Opeth, Green Carnation and Pink Floyd are the main ones.

What's your opinion about the actual metal scene in Belgium ?

I think we have a very vivid scene in Belgium, with a lot of young bands that deserve to break out international. Names that come to mind are Lemuria, Herfst and Axamenta, which we respect a lot.
But Belgium also has great initiatives like deathmetal.be and tartaar.be, which provide an international forum for bands like us. That's cool, because it's not easy for bands like us to get international recognition, also because we don't play music that's easy to catogorize.
On the other hand I think there's still a big gap between the Flemish and the Wallonian scene. Flemish bands don't get to play in Wallonia and vice versa, which is a shame 'cause both sides of our country has some great bands to offer.

What do you expect from the future ?

We have some plans for the future. First of all, there's our new album. Secondly, we hope to play as many gigs as possible, to promote our music. Things are going great, but we would like to play abroad in the near future. We get very positive remarks from Germany, so maybe we could play a few gigs over there.
After eight years of playing we still have the feeling it has all just begun, and there's so much more to achieve. But we already achieved some of our goals: we released our debut album, we've got very positive reactions and we're gaining respect for our music within the scene, so we're very content. But things can always improve, and we'll try to get the best out of it.
