The core of 21grams consists of Leon Fuller and Julia Leisen on vocals and Daniel Haniß as musical director.
Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?
Writing a song can start on both sides of the spectrum, it either starts with a musical idea that inspires certain lyrics or a lyrical scrap outlines further songwriting. We all shoot ideas back and forth and have fun with each others’ input. This can happen in Daniel’s studio as well as via the internet.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?
The lyrics are mostly written by Leon Fuller. We try to formulate honest and authentic lyrics that come from places deep within which can be both comfortable and uncomfortable. Open Heart Surgery examines all matters of the human heart with a slightly cynical edge to it.
Why the name 21GRAMS ?
It took us a really long time to find a name. The “21grams experiment” by Duncan MacDougall in 1907 hypothesizes on the possibility of the soul having a measurable weight. Since we are pouring all our essence into our songs we thought it to be a fitting synonym.
What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?
All of us are very open-minded when it comes to music and art in general. From jazz to extreme metal all forms of expression have a justified place in this universe.
In studio, what was the atmosphere for the album OPEN HEART SURGERY ?...etc.…
Leon Fuller and Daniel Haniß both recorded separately in their own studios to have the most intimacy. Julia Leisen was recorded also at Daniel’s for logistic reasons. We knew what we were each going for since our pre-production already had the direction we liked. So the overall atmosphere was equally concentrated and relaxed.
How does it work for the great design of the CD ? and why this title ?
The title is explained above. For our debut we wanted a plain, straightforward artwork that presents us without additional distraction.
How was the shooting of the clip POWPOW ? and why this choice ?
We had lots of fun shooting PowPow. Shouts out to the Boosted Bonobos crew! PowPow is not a commercial track but very fitting to make a first statement. 21grams is here to stay, we flexed some muscles and now y’all gotta deal with us haha…
Did you find a label ? If yes, how do you made the research ?
We are currently looking for media partners and will first check personal connections. Trust is everything in this business.
With Management and booking, how do you work ? And with whom ?
21grams is very much at its beginning. We can handle the workload fine by ourselves as of now. But we are happy to talk to anyone who is interested in us.
What are your projects ?
The most current project is to get this band on the road now. We want to build a strong base and cannot wait to make our bones. Interacting with supporters worldwide fuels us even more, we really do appreciate each and every one of YOU, thus we cannot wait to meet y’all in person.
What do you expect from the future ?
We hope for organic growth and a growing range. Every step of the way we’ll do our best and will have a hell of a time creating and enjoying art. We feel privileged to do what we love and make the very most of this blessing.
