Katie Knipp, Blues Americana artist from Northern California
What’s the story for TAKE IT WITH YOU ?
This is my 5th album, releasing November 7th, and it feels like a rebirth since I had kids. My love for music was tested and I came out of it finding my true voice.
Are you day or night ?
Both! I don’t sleep since I became a mom, so whenever I get time to flourish it doesn’t matter when it is
What’s your top albums of all time ?
Grace- Jeff Buckley
Live at Fillmore West - Aretha Franklin
Tumbleweed Connection - Elton John
Live at The Fillmore- Lucinda Williams
In the shower or in the bath, do you sing ?
If yes, your songs or those of others ? Absolutely ! Usually I am thinking about my next performance, so I am either learning a cover or adding to my original music. Lately I have been in love with John the Revelator- Son House’s version
What's your best live memory ? And why ?
I can’t pick just one. Opening for Robert Cray on some big stages this year was very exciting. Having my babies was pretty cool too.
In studio, what was the atmosphere for the album TAKE IT WITH YOU ?...etc.…
Comfortable, and extremely efficient. My band made everything so easy and sounded so great, many times I just sat there in awe of their work. When it was time for my tracking I was all business. The environment was so inspiring that I could have worked for 24 hours straight and still had energy. No drugs necessary when you are doing what you love. I got to record on a Mason and Hamlin $125,000 piano. It sounded fantastic.
How does it work for the great design of the CD ? and why this title ?
I love old fashioned things, so the inside cover is a picture of part of the California ghost town Bodie, and the front cover has an old fashioned look that celebrates my love of blues, jazz, americana, and the west in general. The back cover is a picture of my gear onstage at The Crest Theatre in Sacramento, right after sound check on my Robert Cray tour. The title Take it With You just states that I want my music to be in your head, or with you in your car on your road trip. I want to be remembered.
Would you like to work with an artist ? If so who ?
I would love to work with T-Bone Burnett on the next record. I think he would bring out the best in me and understand my quirky, raw, rootsy self. Keb Mo would be a fantastic collaboration as well
What are your projects ?
Live performances to promote the new record, both with the band and as a solo act. Already started writing the next album.
What do you expect from the future ?
I want Take it With you to put me on the map so that I can inspire millions of people around the world, touring to countries that I have yet to visit, and letting women out there know that you CAN achieve your dreams even if you are also a mother.
What's your motto ?
Never give up, always have gratitude, let every action be out of love.
