Present yourself to the readers
My name is Kim Gebriel and I’m a singer/songwriter from Jamaica based in Kingston and Miami.
What’s the story for OASIS?
Oasis is a collection of 7 songs that I believe gives listeners a little taste of what It’s like to be inside my head. It’s executively produced by Sean Alaric of Class One Music. It opens with a glimpse of ‘Paradise’, gives hints of ‘Déjà vu’ and even gives people a little taste of ‘Heaven’.
It was my idea to name my first project ‘Oasis’ because I always thought that music allowed me to kind of escape any harsh realities in life but, at the same time face them. I also think that most of the songs embody this tropical flair I like incorporating into my music and by welcoming people into my Oasis, it definitely set the tone for me as an artist.
Are you day or night ?
I am definitely a night, especially being in university I am constantly up doing something. So when I get time away from school, that’s when I’m usually writing or recording. I think the best studio sessions are the late night ones that run straight into the morning anyway. It gets those creative juices flowing.
What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?
I listen to many genres of music from afrobeat, reggae, dancehall, reggaeton, and pop to indie, classical and even trap. So I’m all over the place when it comes to music and my playlists are crazy. I do admire artists like Syd and Jhene Aiko to vocal powerhouses like Ariana Grande, just to name a few. Like I said, I listen to so many artists. But I have mad respect for singer/songwriters.
In the shower or in the bath, do you sing ? If yes, your songs or those of others ?
I sing sometimes in the shower and if I’m not singing along, I’m definitely playing loud music while I’m showering. It’s an absolute must ! I play mostly other artists music. I’d play mine if it’s something I recently worked on and it’s about to get released
.
In studio, what was the atmosphere for the E.P OASIS ?...etc.…
When I first started working with Sean, we would just vibe to random tracks he made or if I had an idea he would make it come to life at his studio. His studio has those cool neon lights that change color, a comfortable couch and I always feel welcomed. Nothing was ever forced in studio and the vibe was always right even if I got a writer’s block, we’d just revisit the idea another time and work on something else or maybe watch a couple funny videos to let lose. The songs kept flowing, especially while vibing and writing with artists like Khxos, and we just ultimately decided “Why not just make this an EP?”
How does it work for the great design of the CD ? and why this title ?
The Cover picture was shot in Jamaica by photographer Jonathan South (@jonsouthy) and the artwork was designed by graphic designer Stephanie Channer (@c.h.a.n.n.e.r). I wanted the front and back to have a Tropical vibe with bright colors and a peacefull atmosphere, hence depicting the ‘Oasis’.
What are your projects ?
The major projects I have out right now on all platforms are :
1. this EP ‘Oasis’ with 7 songs and ‘Heaven’ being the first single to be released.
2. ‘Treat Me Better’ produced by Sean Alaric featuring myself and Khxos.
3. ‘Right By you’ written by and performed by myself and produced and performed by Sheen.
I also have songs like ‘Music Lover’ and ‘Stronger’ on my soundcloud both produced by Roe Summerz to name a few more.
I have some upcoming projects to be released with Khxos and with some other artists and producers.
What do you expect from the future ?
My ultimate goal is to be a well-known singer/songwriter and to strike a deal writing for other major artists. I’d also like to collaborate with as many big artists as possible. Until that time comes I want to continue to grow as an artist and continue making good music that many people will appreciate.
What's your motto ?
“It is What it is”
Meaning, I can’t control the future but I can work as hard and as smart as I can to ensure I’ve done my best. Whatever the outcome is, I did my best with the cards I’ve been dealt.
I also like saying “Aye yeah yeah yeah”. I wouldn’t really classify it as a motto but, you’ll hear that a lot in my music. It’s just something that gets the vibe right.
