Hey everyone! We’re Sleep Juliet, a rock band from the great state of Texas! For fans of Paramore, Anberlin, Breaking Benjamin, and other mid-2000s sounding bands then we’re your guys (and gal).
The band consists of:
Kendall Kinchen – Vocals
Josh Bailey – Guitar
Kirk Hooper – Guitar
Matt Perry – Bass Guitar
Trent Milstead – Drums
We just released our new full-length album for 2018 entitled “Nightfall” on Apple Music, Amazon Music, and all the big streaming services so check it out!

Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?

Our lead guitarist Josh Bailey creates a simple demo song in his home studio and sends it out to everyone else to learn and form some input on any changes. Since the band doesn’t usually “jam” together to create new songs it has proved itself to be a streamlined method. Once everyone has tweaked their own parts the original demo song can barely be recognizable to the finished album version. Much of Nightfall was written in this fashion with a song or two as an exception.

Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?

Kendall typically writes all of the lyrics. Sometimes Matt offers suggestions or she’ll ask him for a line here or there.
They’re based on adventures we’ve had or empathy for what our loved ones go through. Kendall likes to write about people, places, and specific situations that she draws from personal experiences.

Why the name SLEEP JULIET ?

Sleep Juliet has been in the underground scene in East Texas for about 6 years and with that there’s been several lineup changes. When the band was forming everyone was throwing out potential ideas and none of them sounded good. They were either too cliché or just silly. That’s when former drummer Gary Brevard suggested that we use a name that’s been on his mind for a while. No reasoning or backstory behind it…just something simple and different. After a quick google search later to make sure there wasn’t another Sleep Juliet hiding in another country we made it official. Even with changing members up until the band’s recent years it didn’t make sense to change the name at all as every lineup spilled into the next. Each band became more of an evolution of the Sleep Juliet name as it became bigger and bigger.

What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?

If you were to describe a melting pot of different tastes than that would be us with music. Kendall pulls heavily from the light-hearted side of punk and musicals. Josh can switch from In Flames to John Mayer in a heartbeat. Kirk always has a new Killswitch Engage styled guitar riff he’ll play. Matt can go on and on (it literally happened in the studio) about his love for Aerosmith and Green Day. The newest member of the group Trent is a true classic metal fan that’ll jam out to any Metallica song you throw at him. Somehow the magic happens and all 5 of us meet in the middle in our love of music and manage to create sounds that work well together.

In studio, what was the ambiance for the album NIGHTFALL ?...etc.…

Our goal in recording Nightfall was to make an album that called back to the mid-2000’s pop-punk sound that it seems has caught a resurgence. Bands like Anberlin, Paramore, Panic! At The Disco, and such that when they were starting out still had loud rock guitars but also catchy hooks and choruses. That translated in the studio as to making Kendall cut through the mix and soar in all the songs. Our producer Joey Cefalu worked closely with Kendall to pull the right harmony or melody to get stuck in people’s heads. Instrument wise it was a game changer as well. Gone were the head decapitating metal sounds of releases prior and more vintage style guitars and amps were used. All of that together just created a great atmosphere to try something new that we probably wouldn’t have done otherwise

How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?

Once the songs were taking shape we could tell our idea was coming to fruition. This collection of songs covered everything from fist pounding hooks, head banging instrumental breaks, and softer more nuanced ballads. They dynamics between all the songs worked better than we could’ve ever imagined. We actually thought of the songs as falling into 3 Acts: Eventide (which means evening), Daybreak, and Nightfall. The first Act is pretty dark, the second is more uplifting, and the third and final Act is as angry and heavy as it gets.

What are your projects ?

We are working on some music video concepts that we’re excited to get going and writing new music for the next album
