The Eternal formed in Melbourne, Australia in late 2002. In the bands 15 year history they have released 5 internationally acclaimed studio albums, 2 Live albums & a concert DVD. The band has toured extensively nationally & internationally with the likes of Amorphis, Anathema, Him, Katatonia, Swallow The Sun & Opeth just to name a few. The Eternal’s sound can be best described as dark, melancholic, emotive metal with Doom & Progressive influences.
The 17th of August 2018 will see the release of the bands 6th studio album ‘Waiting for The Endless Dawn’.

What’s the story for WAITING FOR THE ENDLESS DAWN ?

It’s our 6th full length studio album, out first since 2013, we have been writing and recording it for around 3 years, it has 7 songs and clocks in at around 75 minutes, we wants to make something really cinematic, dark which sort of no boundries as far as structure and I think we have managed to achieve what we set out to do.

Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?

For the most part I have been the main composer of the band, music and lyrics, on this album its was a little more collaborative with most of the music being composed by myself, guitarist Richie Poate & Martin Powell. The whole band including Marty and Dave contributed to ‘The Wound’. I still wrote the lyrics but as I sing them I guess this keeps the emotion honest.

Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?

As I mentioned I write the Lyrics, I write introspectively and try to write from my own emotional states or experiences, I think this helps people releate to us as we come from an honest place, The Eternal has been a great source of expression and therapy for me over the years.

Why the name THE ETERNAL ?

Well that was 15 years ago now, but we needed a name and I wanted something epic that matched the grand scale of our music soi t came down to ‘The Eternal’ or ‘The Fallen’ and we just picked ‘The Eternal’ as it just stuck in our minds.

What's your best live memory ? And why ?

We have played with lots of great bands all over the world over the years so thats a hard one ! Our first headline show in Japan back in 2009 was super fun and an amazing crowd, our first big tour ever was with Opeth on their Ghost Reveries tour and that will always stand out as a high point as it all happened so fast, we were playing small clubs then all of a sudden on the road with Opeth, all a bit of a trip back in 2006 !

In studio, what was the atmosphere for the new album WAITING FOR THE ENDLESS DAWN ?...etc.…

Well the studio is mine, I run Kelsonic Studios in Melbourne, and for the most part it was myself and guitarist Richie producing the album, soi t was a really fun and creative experience, having our own studio makes the process really easy. Of course that means something we can over analyse and take a bit long sometimes, but we are lucky to have the gear and skills to make our own albums, especially in the modern industry where advances are not what they used to be.

How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?

The titles usually just come to me, I’m not sure why they just seem to be there, Waiting For The Endless Dawn to me is about waiting for a light at the end of the tunnel or a way out of darkness. The Artwork is by Barnell Photography in America, the pieces was called ‘New Dawn’ and just seemed to fit perfectly with the music, so I’m glad we managed to get hold of it !

What are your projects ?

instrumental but between The Eternal and my music production work I dont get much time to work on it. Richie is also in the band Dreadnaught and has been so for around 25 years.
