Present yourself to the readers

We are Sam and Hayley Forrest from North Yorkshire, UK. We like to make loud noises as Howling Sludge.

Who composes ?...How does it work in the duo ?

Sam writes the riffs on guitar whilst I (Hayley) hit the drums and make up a melody on the spot. We write like this quickly, and record the song within an hour or two. And then forgot how to play it.

Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?

Hayley comes up with a vocal melody of vowel sounds. We then go through the melody and try and make the vowel sounds into real words. Then a story or idea usually organically develops and that gives us the theme for the song.

Why the name HOWLING SLUDGE ?

We went to see Thurston Moore’s (ex Sonic Youth) new noise band, Chelsea Light Moving, and we thought we would try and make similar sounds. It ended sounding different, but the resulting noises sounded like howling sludge, so we called ourselves Howling Sludge.

What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?

Nirvana, Hole, Dinosaur Jr, The Breeders and lots of the bands that appeared on the 1996 Hype documentary that covered the Seattle music scene of the early 1990s. Plus more recent acts like Ty Segall, Wavves and Best Coast.

What's your best live memory ? And why ?

Yesterday we played in front of our cat, Gilmore, that was pretty good.

What are your future dates ?

They are so far in the future that we don’t know what they are yet. But we are sure that they will be pretty good.

In studio, what was the ambiance for your great debut album?...etc.…

We record in our home studio, so the vibe is pretty cosy and hygge. We have a lava lamp but it wasn’t turned on. Lots of cups of tea and packets of crisps were involved too.

How does it work for the design of the CD ?

The artwork was taken from the stills for our ‘Sloth’ video, and the text was taken from a handwritten scribble that we sellotaped to our kick drum.

With Management and booking, how do you work ? And with whom ?

We manage ourselves but we run our own record label, Desert Mine, with our friend Bjorn. We’ve also just recently got a new PR person called John Hardy at Racket PR who will be taking care of business.

What are your projects ?

We need to relearn how to play all of the songs from our debut album!

What do you expect from the future ?

Hoverboards.

What's your motto ?

It’s nice to be nice (we saw that on the front of a shop in the Highlands in Scotland and decided to claim it for ourselves).

Website to remember ?

What would you like to say to the readers ?

Sorry…. kisses

Thanks for the upkeep
