We are Sam and Hayley Forrest from North Yorkshire, UK. We like to make loud noises as Howling Sludge.
Who composes ?...How does it work in the duo ?
Sam writes the riffs on guitar whilst I (Hayley) hit the drums and make up a melody on the spot. We write like this quickly, and record the song within an hour or two. And then forgot how to play it.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?
Hayley comes up with a vocal melody of vowel sounds. We then go through the melody and try and make the vowel sounds into real words. Then a story or idea usually organically develops and that gives us the theme for the song.
Why the name HOWLING SLUDGE ?
We went to see Thurston Moore’s (ex Sonic Youth) new noise band, Chelsea Light Moving, and we thought we would try and make similar sounds. It ended sounding different, but the resulting noises sounded like howling sludge, so we called ourselves Howling Sludge.
What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?
Nirvana, Hole, Dinosaur Jr, The Breeders and lots of the bands that appeared on the 1996 Hype documentary that covered the Seattle music scene of the early 1990s. Plus more recent acts like Ty Segall, Wavves and Best Coast.
What's your best live memory ? And why ?
Yesterday we played in front of our cat, Gilmore, that was pretty good.
What are your future dates ?
They are so far in the future that we don’t know what they are yet. But we are sure that they will be pretty good.
