We are When ‘Airy Met Fairy – we make music for music lovers.
Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?
Most of the songs are written by Thorunn who then arranges them with Mike (bass & moog) and Thomas (drums). Runa, Thorunn’s sister, is in charge of “art directing”the sound. The goal is to find the right balance between emotion, rawness and intensity.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?.How does inspiration come ?
Thorunn approaches song writing through the eyes of a poet. Therefore our songs try to capture the essence of an emotion – without leaving an “obvious trace”. You might find additional meaning in the way how Thorunn sings.
Why the name “When 'Airy Met Fairy” ?
Blame it on Bacchus! Three of Thorunn’s friends and a lot of sake!
What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?
The list is endless… Violent Femmes, The Beatles, David Bowie, Jeff Buckley, Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, Nick Cave, Portishead, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Alt J, Emiliana Torrini, The Magnetic Fields, Sigur Rós, etc ....
What are your future dates ?
We’ve got a second Japan tour coming up but we’re also playing gigs at for instance “Melkweg” in Amsterdam and festivals such as Mama and Reeperbahn.
In studio, what was the ambiance for your great album GLOW ?...etc.…
James Brown once said “if it feels right, it is right”. That’s pretty much our approach. We’re picky though and took our time to record Glow. We worked over two years on the project before its release.
How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?
Runa, our art director, has her very own style that matches our sound. She likes it raw and we do, too! The fallen angel (male!) is walking past the viewer. The action symbolizes that even a fallen angel has a future. There is hope in that - and that is precisely what we want to communicate with our music. Hope is what drives us in life. Hope is powerful. It is stronger than fear. The word “Glow” is our symbol for hope, because it shines in a humble way.
What are your projects ?
We’re promoting our album and hope to be able to binge-read more of these lovely reviews we’ve been getting. Parallel to that we’re working on new songs. Our goal is to continue to play lovely gigs with lovely people in lovely places.
What do you expect from the future ?
Most of the time, things do not happen the way you imagined it, that is why we try not to expect too much. It will only lead to disappointment. But we have a vision. That vision is to continue pouring our hearts out in a sonic way. Our film makers Raphael Kindig’s and Runa Egilsdottir’ s job is to add visual.

Be brave, be different. But stay humble while you’re at it.
