Present yourself to the readers

We are The Anix, a band from Los Angeles making simple electronic music. Brandon (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards), Logan (Brandon’s brother, drums) and Chris (guitars). I (Brandon) will be doing the interview today.

Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?

Generally the songs start with me (Brandon) creating a beat, or a riff which turns into a fully produced song. We then play that song live as a band, then go back in a rearrange parts, make things shorter, or heavier etc. This is very helpful in making electronic music more exciting to listen to because it injects some life into the otherwise cold electronic parts.

Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?

I write the lyrics. Inspiration is a dodgy thing to come across.
Sometimes it’s there, sometimes only for a split second and you need to catch it before it vanishes. Our songs are generally written in metaphors and can be understood in different ways. For example a song on the surface may sound like it is about a relationship, but it was actually about the music business. The ideas behind the songs are not special. They are general thoughts that all of us have every day.
The same struggles you have, we have as well.

Why the name THE ANIX ?

I loved the short names from the 80’s that started with “The”. “The Cars”, “The Police”, “The Cure” etc. I wanted a name that sounded kind of like a retro futuristic video game. Something along the lines of Tron. There was a synthesizer from the 80’s called the AN1X, so we took the idea from that.

What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?

I have always been a multi genre listener. My music taste is split into rock bands and electronic music. I love the Deftones, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Prodigy, Crystal Castles and some house/techno acts like Maceo Plex, Sasha, Hot Since 82, Several Definitions, Dusky etc. Although our album is electronic, it has the back bone of a rock band due to our influences. There’s no way I can write a song and remove that part of it-it’s engrained in my DNA and what makes our music different.

What's your best live memory ? And why ?

All of the shows we played in Germany with Apoptygma Berzerk.
Incredible friendships were made with those guys, great crowds, great venues, great challenges.

What are your future dates ?

We are focusing more on doing live streamed shows rather than massive touring.

In studio, what was the ambiance for your great album EPHEMERAL ?…etc.…

We always write songs to fit the night. Our songs sound too dark or melancholy during the day, so it’s best to listen to the album at night while driving in a car. Much of the album was produced back and forth in studio and in the car since that is the best reference I have for how it should sound. The car test is the ultimate determining factor of when a song is ready for press.

How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?

We wanted this album’s art to focus on creating a mood or an idea. We got rid of all photos of us, or stopped showing our faces because we just don't care to be in the spotlight at all. If it were up to me we would do zero band photos but I don't think that is very interesting to most of our fans so the compromise was to just remove our faces. I’m sick of everyone on the planet striving to be famous. Everyone wants ! their face front and center of everything. I can’t even watch a video on youtube of how to fix my sink without sitting through 5 minutes of some guy self promoting. We want nothing to do with the rat race so we removed ourself from it.

With Management and booking, how do you work ? And with whom ?

We do everything on our own. Our label helps with PR and marketing, but we do not have management or booking agents.

What are your projects ?

We are all extremely passionate about cars and spend a ridiculous amount of time in the garage. I also started a company called Robota Project with my Fiancé where we make robot rings and pins and donate part of the proceeds to animal rescues. www.robotaproject.com

What do you expect from the future ?

I am hoping to write music for movies and video games!

What's your motto ?

“It’s not who did it first, but who did it best” - David Bowie
