Present yourself to the readers

The Golden Age Of Nothing are Graeme Wilkinson on vocals and guitar, Graham Seaman on viola, Bren Green on bass and Mike Elliott on guitar. Miss Whippy plays drums… she lives in an Apple Macbook.

Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?

Graeme writes pretty much all the songs as virtually complete demos of guitar, vocals, bass and drums at home then sends them to the others. Then in rehearsals, Bren will learn the bass line (then add his own style to it) and Graham will then work out his viola parts while Mike adds his guitar. Occasionally, Bren will bring in a bass line and we’ll work the song up from that. The idea is that the next batch of songs will be more of a band thing. It’s a lot of pressure for one person to write all the songs.

Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?

Once again, Graeme writes all the lyrics. They are about all sorts of things. The last album was about loss. Inspiration comes from everywhere… film, books, overheard conversations, general life.

Why the name THE GOLDEN AGE OF NOTHING ?

It’s a joke. Probably not a very funny one.

What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?

The Cure, Nick Cave, The Sisters of Mercy, The Velvet Underground, Tom Waits, Max Richter, Bowie, The Tiger Lillies…

What's your best live memory ? And why ?

The first gig we ever played… it was dreadful. And the last gig we ever played… it was amazing.

What are your future dates ?

We are playing Sound It Out Records on 27th May then have a gig in Newcastle on 17th June and then we’re playing Carpe Noctum in Leeds on 7th October. There’ll be some in between too, we’d imagine.

The Golden Age of Nothing

In studio, what was the ambiance for the album MONUMENTS ?...etc.…

Lonely… funny… sad… happy… frantic… mellow… drunk.

How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?

The photo on the front was taken by our lovely Belgian friend, Vicki De Bruyne and the cover was designed by Graeme. It’s printed white ink on black card and looks lovely! Bren thought of the title… it just fitted with the theme of the album… the effect of things that have gone or disappeared.

With Management and booking, how do you work ? And with whom ?

We sort it all out ourselves. We tend not to like people from outside sticking their noses in. And we certainly don’t like to be told what to do.

What are your projects ?

Graeme W is in another band called Sticky Pearls and has a solo thing called Bloodybones, while Graham S has a solo drone project called Veil. Mike has a band called Cult Figure, who are a kind of heavy indie thing.

What do you expect from the future ?

More songs, more gigs, more fun, more drink, more everything.

What's your motto ?

We don’t have a motto…
