Hello, I'm Jerry Rock'n'roll and I play bass on King Satan
Hi there! I’m Aleister, I am the vocalist-songwriter-programmer, music video director and general hustler. Of this band. Also.
What’s the story for THE KILLING OF GOD ?
There is this cool line ”God is dead" that we wanted to use in our song. It's from some book or poem of this famous old guy with the mustache whose name nobody can pronounce correctly.
That’s right! Also, story goes back to when I was 13 years old and grounded for smoking cigarettes, so I had nothing else to do than to read ”Thus Spake Zarathustra”. And, then, 15 years later I made a song inspired about, spiced it with own interpretation, adjustment and artistic touch of course. With the video I wanted to summarize the gist of it into couple of characterized gestures while expressing my reverence towards splatter music videos and Space Odyssey 2001. Im avid fan of both symbolism and the trash films. And herr Antichrist also of course.
Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?
Aleister & Kate Boss the synth player makes lot of demos, ideas and rhythms and sometimes I happen to be at our studio on hangover trying to jam some bluesy stuff on tape.
Most of the song ideas and raw compositions comes by me, then they get filtered through Kate and then the whole band. Almost all bass riffs gets their golden touch through Jerry’s hangover, that is true yes. It works perfectly this way, cos they all are way more skillful musicians than I, hah! But Kate and Jerry did some own composing indeed for this album as well. To be honest, I am not completely sure how we do things these days, they just happen.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?
Aleister writes all the things. If I'd do it themes would be around dogs, beer & boobs. So It's better this way.
..and I try to write about dogs, beer and boobs, but they somehow end up being metaphysical and psychological concepts about Philosophy, Satanism, Occultism and Spiritual Anarchy. I don’t know what happens.
Why the name KING SATAN ?
I was at the grocery store picking up soy sauce and I was between brands, when I saw ”Soy King” soy sauce. I bought it because of a name. As a devoted Satanist making Satanic music, I wanted to apply this logic into naming a band as well. But of course there was more to it before that, just waiting the confirmation, or omen. The devil’s archetype, especially Satan is so rich source of different symbolical interpretations that I am completely obsessed about it, even to the point that I am devoted my life fully to it. So naturally I wanted it to be in the band’s name too. Sort of a rebel with a cause attitude fits very well into extreme music as well.
I thought it was Aleister’s last name.
What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?
I listen lot of old school hip hop & old jazz. I think it's like that because I have no idea how to compose that kind of music so smoothly. My musical influences and playing style is more like bluesy rock'n'roll.. The Hellacopters, Turbonegro, GnR and shit like that.
It varies a lot. I like trashy and/or off-beat stuff with a real soul and own identity. Recently I have listened a lot of Laibach, The Prodigy, Turbonegro, Tom Waits alongside with black- and death metal which gives some kind of image of my taste. Influences wise also I guess, but I tend to get influenced by lots of things, even things that at first glance contradict each other. When I was making first King Satan demo, I wanted to see what happens if I combine The Prodigy type of electro to Deicide type of death metal. With the new album I tried to see what happens when I combine 80’s and 90’s together, but at the end of the day, I am a satanic hippie and punk obsessed with extreme metal and electro-industrial.
In studio, what was the atmosphere for your album ?...etc…
It was like hanging out on your friend's place but you have nasty hangover and infinite cups of coffee. Very professional.
Hard to say, I kind of live in the studio. It’s like living in the eye of a storm. You can’t see the storm. So I’d say it was quite a Zen and the same time very chaotic, but only if you remove the Zen part from it. And I was also the sound engineer, so for me it was a living hell, because to combine that with artistic creativity sucks ass, yet I am also borderline perfectionist so it is still better for me to be sound engineer instead of hired help. But yeah, I guess it was very similar to like hanging out with friends, but just that someone presses record button once in a while and your friends plays several instruments in disoriented state of mind.
How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?
We wanted 90's style cd which was and is format of our generation. We had couple of other options for title but this was strongest and suits well with album cover.
It is sort of undertone of the album’s lyrical themes. All the cool kids worship Satan.
How was the shooting of the clip I WANT YOU TO WORSHIP SATAN ? and why this choice ?
”Psychosadomasochism” is a killer cartoon music video fully edited by Aleister. There is lot of hidden things you can't see first time you watch it. Like dinosaur for example.
I guess you are referring to ”The Killing Of God” video and not to ”Psychosadomasochism”? since it was featured on the ”Video of the Week” section? But, the shooting was easy with this one, we went to the studio of a good friend of ours, a local DIY Artist of Pyynikin Aikamatkat and jested in the front of green screen. Editing was another story. We did all in all four music videos for ”I Want You To Worship Satan” album, others were from ”Fuck Yoga” and ”All Magick Is Chaos Magick”. We tried to choose the music videos from different type of songs to serve a holistic image of the album itself.
What were we talking about?
Did you find a label ? If yes, how do you made the research ?
We were playing at Lost In Music Festival at our hometown Tampere and this weird hobo looking guy came up and said that you are now at our label. We were like, allright allright!
That is how it happened yes
With Management and booking, how do you work ? And with whom ?
In Finland we work with Nem Agency and they do all the booking here. Outside of Finland we have no exclusive deals and we are not part of any roster at this moment, but we have worked with several promoters in sort of project-based manner. In Belgium actually we have worked and still work with Mr. Bart Dandois, who is absolutely a stand up guy! Hope he gets us to Belgium for the third time soon enough! We have no manager or management outside of concerts.
What are your projects ?
I also play guitar in neofolk/occult rock band called ITERUM NATA.
I work for a sound engineer & producer for a BLACKVOX STUDIO, but recently I have been concentrated 90% of my time for my own bands instead of producing others, and I do vocals for black metal band called SATURNIAN MIST as well. I’m also developing own philosophical system as a hobby.
What do you expect from the future ?
Lots of money, drugs and sex of course. That's why we do this.
Nuclear winter. But you need money to cause nuclear winter, so…
What's your motto ?
”Dogs rock and cats roll". This phrase includes infinite cosmic truth if you understand it fully.
I got many mottos, but a buddy of mine shared this one last week and it had deep impact on me: ”The probability of you getting attacked by a gorilla at any given point is very low, but it’s never zero.” It works on so many levels.
