My frost was formed in early 2013 by current and founding members Ady and myself (Roach). We both had songs written we were looking to use for a new project and after discovering we had similar goals and ideas for direction "My Frost" was formed. The line up has recently been completed with bassist Joe and drummer Bas and our debut album was realeased on October 4.
What’s the story for YULETIDE HORIZON ?
The name Yuletide horizon was chosen to describe the general theme of the album. A light at the end of the tunnel sort of idea. The album starts off lyrically and musically with a dark, depressive vibe and then ends on a hopeful note with the title track symbolizing a sense of "victory". Overcoming the dark, the bleak, the negative and moving on to the next chapter.
Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?
Ady and myself did all the composing for the first album but with the new line up that may change going forward and the new members will likely be involved in future writing. There is no real set process.
Generally Ady or I would have an idea, present it to the other and if it's a finished song experiment with a few ideas or finishing touches before deciding a song is ready for recording/performing. There are also some tracks which were more of a collaborative effort. one of us writes some riffs, the other one adds to it and then it just goes back and forth til we agree we've created something we're both happy.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?
Ady and myself also both write lyrics. The writing generally has similar themes. Loss, depression, hopelessness. The burdens and trials of everyday life. We do have different writing styles though. Ady frequently includes philosophy and metophors in his writing where as I take a more direct and literal approach.
Why the name MY FROST ?
The name my frost was Adys idea. I believe he had it in mind before we even officially formed the band if I remember correctly. It's an accurate representation of where we both wanted to go musically.
There's a very overall "cold" feeling to the music we write. Heavy but not necessarilly aggressive or angry with dark melodic passages added throughout
What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?
There's an endless assortment of influences for both of us. I know some of Adys main influences are My Dying Bride, Ulver, and Katatonia. For myslef, Lyrically definitely Mick Moss of Antimatter, Jerome Reuter of Rome and Marko Saaresto of Poets of the fall. Musically The Foreshadowing, Saturnus,vDaylight Dies, Enshine. We both listen to a wide range of music from metal to folk to pop to industrial.
In studio, what was the atmosphere for your new album ?...etc.…
Ady is a sound engineer so The base recordings were all done at his place. It was a pretty relaxed environment. nothing was rushed and it gave Ady the freedom and control to really make sure the songs were exactly what we wanted before we sent them to Tyler Williams of Monolithinc Productions for mixing and mastering. We also had the wonderful experience of working with a lot of guest musicians from an assortment of great bands contributing vocals and guitar parts that really helped turn this album into something that exceeded our expectations.
How does it work for the great design of the CD ? and why this title ?
Ady came up with the idea for the album cover concept and design. I initially thought wed work with a graphic artist. The idea to do an actual photo shoot with a model, props and costumes had neve occured to me. The model is a friend of Adys and I believe she custom made the outfit. The smoke effect was done with a glass bottle and dry ice. I was a little skeptical of the idea at first but the end result turned out to be great. The title was just about ending things on a positive note. It's the closing track of the album and stands out a little bit from the other tracks with a catchy uplifting sort of feel so it seemed like a good fit.
What are your projects ?
Ady plays guitar and does vocals in a symphonic metal band Dispersia and has a few as of now unnamed projects hes working on. Joe our bassist has an assortment of bands. Feral, White Wolves, Cntrl. I may be forgetting a few. Our drummer Bas plays with another band Axminister. I have an acoustic project with a friend of mine Ethereal Bloom but not sure at the moment if recording or performances are planned for the future.
What do you expect from the future ?
Our next "realistic" goals for the future are to start working on ideas for a music video, a lyric video, promote the album as much as possible and get to work on new material. We certainly have no intention of slowing down. Hopefully the album is recieved well. We've gotten some great feedback so far and overall good reviews. For me the ultimate goal for the future is to play/tour in Europe. I visit the Metaldays festival every year in Slovenia and have made a lot of friends id love to perform with/for.
Weve applied for the new metal festival and are starting to reach out to promoters, festivals and other bands to see if we can arrange something. We'll see what the future brings
