What’s the story for RELAPSE IN TIME ?
Relapse in Time is a concept album, which follows the journey on from album two, within the frozen design. in this chapter the protagonist finds himself in a very strange land, surrounded by desolate buildings in a Mars like terrain. He struggles to find anything familiar and is lost. Slowly the air starts to run out as the album concludes...
Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?
This album has been quite a different collaboration to normal. we have several x members who originally helped composed some of the album. Richard Marsden on drums, and Janson Sissons on keyboards. Wayne and I a lot of the material, and I worked extensively with John Bradley (keyboards/backing vocals) to finish up some of the songs I was working on for this album. Sometimes Wayne (Taylor - rhythm guitar and fellow founding member) and I will collaborate on songs, which is what we did with Ever Darkark and Thought Machine. Some songs one more of a solo composition for example with Astral World (drums - Marsden), Defy Me, Dreamscape, Final Parting Glass, In Time etc. John and I put together some big sound scapes and he did a fantastic job of recording and editing this album for us.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?
In reference to lyrics I write all of these. Often they are metaphors for real life situations, such as mental health or world topics. this bird album has been especially fun with the lyrics to continue a concept throughout.
I was particularly inspired with lyrics for this album after watching The Martian.
Why the name WINTER STORM ?
Wayne and I came up with the name for the band and it's simply stuck that's all there is to it haha.
What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?
Personally I'm influenced by a lot of different music, from music scores by Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Tesseract, Plini, Rush, Intervals, Opeth, Iron Maiden, Nightwish, Triosphere, Avantasia, Edguy, Devin Townsend, Eluveitie and many more.
What's your best live memory ? And why ?
A couple of the best life memories have to be playing in Belgium for the first time on Wizzfest, but also when I return to the stage as my first live concert singing again after my throat injury at Bloodstock 2015. I was so emotional and overwhelmed by the amount of people there and the support for me on my first singing concert back after my MTD.
In studio, what was the atmosphere for your new album ?...etc.…
We recorded lot of the album separately and then took the 11 tracks to Greg chandler at priory studios in Sutton Coldfield for mixing and mastering, and some re-amping.
How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?
Matthew Vickerstaff of dark wave art has designed the album covers for all three of our albums so far. That works with big bands such as cradle of filth, My dying bride, paradise Lost, and peaceville records.
How was the shooting of the clip ASTRAL WORLD ? and why this choice ?
We felt Astral World was a strong song from the beginning, and it was the first song I wrote for the album. the filming went really well and having Nick j Townsend on board to film US made it such a smooth and succinct process. Nick managed to capture exactly what we wanted from the video and brought out the best in all of us including a friend of ours, Ian, who acted in the video as well.
What are your projects ?
Outside of the band I don't do much else musically other than I teach guitar and Ukulele Monday to Friday. I believe John does occasionally participate in an acoustic act, Andy (Hawkins - bass)/Nathan (Hutchins -drums) play in some tribute bands, and Wayne sings in his own band called Awaiting Ends.
What's your motto ?
Enjoy the music, live for the moment on stage and always create with passion.
