Present yourself to the readers

I am Mordecai, the lead vocalist and drummer for Scarlet Oath. The rest of the band consists of Atara on Keyboards and female vocals, and Matar on guitars and bass.

What’s the story for BLOOD AND FIRE ?

The album title is taken from the title track from the album, which has a historical prophetic feel that leads into an apocalyptic kind of ending. The lyrics are all available on our Bandcamp page for those who would like to take a closer look.

Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?

Everyone in the band is involved in the compositions. We can approach the song from multiple angles, might be an interesting melody or riffs and we can go from there, or some basic structural ideas that we build upon.

Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?

I (Mordecai) write all the lyrics. I read a lot of theological and philosophical works that greatly inspire my lyrics. That combined with my personal faith would be the greatest inspiration.
I would say the lyrics are somewhat theocentric at the core, but still covering the darker side of such themes.

Why the name SCARLET OATH ?

Blood covenants and oaths were very common in the ancient Near East. So much of the lyrical content is dealing with things of this nature so it just seemed fitting: everything from the temple sacrifices in Old testament theology, or the condemned child sacrifices offered to the Canaanite god, Molech, are covered in the lyrics.
In Christian theology, it could be said that the ultimate "Scarlet Oath" was fulfilled in the sacrificial death of Christ, or the atonement; which is the more theological term, and solidified in his resurrection.

What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?

Honestly, we would run out of space if we tried to list all of the tastes and influences the three of us have. We love music from a multitude of genres but I would say the biggest influences come mostly from older 70's type stuff. We like a lot of old Classic and Progressive Rock, but we also love Extreme Metal, especially the darker and more doom-laiden stuff. It generally has more of an organic feel and is more about expressing emotion and mood, as opposed to showing off.
We love everything from Zeppelin, early Genesis and Rush, to Paradise Lost, Swallow The Sun and Tristania.

In studio, what was the atmosphere for your album ?...etc.…

We recorded in our basements. Unfortunately the atmosphere when we recorded would probably be considered rather normal for any indie band these days; nothing too spectacular.
We always tried to get alone and tap into a mood, but that proves to be a challenge sometimes.

How does it work for the great design of the CD?and why this title ?

I have a friend who does graphic design for a living and is a fantastic artist. I was browsing through his portfolio and once I saw the artwork I had to have it. All three of us agreed that it for the themes and vibe of what we doing perfectly. You can check out his work on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/deathisgain713/
The title is simply based off the title track.

What are your projects ?

Nothing at this point, but we would love it if we could do several more albums for Scarlet Oath.

What's your motto ?

Make the music you love without caring whether others like it or not. If other people happen to like it, that's great! If not, that's fine as well.

What would you like to say to the readers ?

Support sites and zines like this that give attention to the underground. They do it out of passion for the artform and that's what keeps great art alive!
