Present yourself to the readers
I’m the singer and main songwriter in Dwell In Doom, and I’m the one who have answered these questions. In 2018 I started writing songs for our debut album “Witches”. The recording started in late 2018 and continued the following year. Our debut single “Unfaithful Bitch” was released on July 26. The song got a lot of attention because of the video, which featured some good-looking bikini girls. Not very suitable for a death metal video according to some people, but that was our intention - to get attention! “Witches” was released on August 21, and we recently released our second album “Death to Us”.
What’s the story for DEATH TO US ?
We started writing and recording “Death to Us” as soon as “Witches” had been released. The idea was to make a more coherent and heavier album. No electronic songs, no clean vocals. We wanted a perfect mixture of gothic, death and doom metal. We were striving for diversity, but not as much as we did on “Witches”. “Death to Us” is very emotional and personal to me. At the time I was going through a divorce and to make “Death to Us” was a way of handling all these different emotions. Sadness was one of them, which inspired me to write “In Desolation We Dwell”. I love that song, and even though I’ve heard it many times while recording the album, I still feel emotional when I listen to it. I also felt a lot of anger about things that had happened in my marriage. So I wrote “Let the Past Die” and “Black Rings” to channel that anger. We wanted a catchy tune as our first single, and we wanted it out on Halloween. So “Gothic Girl” became the first single.
Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?
Since the beginning of Dwell In Doom, I’ve done all the composing. But that may change in the future.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?
I obviously write all the lyrics. Our first album “Witches” had a theme. It was about the oppression of women - the modern witches. “Death to Us” focused more on the world within - the dark, painful emotions. It often starts with a song title, then I try to write lyrics connected to that title. Inspiration comes from personal experiences and things going on in the world. Writing lyrics is a way of dealing with my thoughts and emotions.
Why the name DWELL IN DOOM ?
“Dwell” and “Doom” are two fantastic words, and we just put them together. The name sounded cool and it fitted our music. It’s very difficult to come up with a good band name these days. But we’re happy with it.
In studio, what was the atmosphere for your new album ?...etc.…
It was easy to write and record the songs, even though it sometimes was emotionally painful. Maybe creativity is at its best when you’re at your worst.
How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?
All the cover photos we’ve used so far, we’ve bought. But the artworks are designed by us. The risk of buying photos is that someone else can use the same photo. On every single and album cover we’ve used photos of women. That’s why some people think that there are women in this band, but there are not. Just men. We’ve used women because women are beautiful and because it fits the theme; “Witches”, “Unfaithful Bitch” and “Gothic Girl” for example. It’s also coherent and recognizable, just like the band logo.
What are your projects ?
Right now we’re promoting the new album. After that, we’ll take a break, because we’ve released two full-length album in a short period of time.
