Present yourself to the readers
First of all thanks for the interview. We are Skull Metal, a four piece heavy metal band from Yucatán, México. With influences of bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Arch Enemy, etc. Formed by Abner Balam on vocals, Braulio Díaz on guitars, Manuel Pacheco on bass and Omar Felix on drums. And we are here to play and share our music with all the world in order to show the great talent of our region.
What’s the story for your new album ?
It's a production recorded from January to October of 2019 recorded in the studio Rec in Peace of Ritual Prod. Produced by Braulio Díaz and Manuel Pacheco. When we start playing in 2017 we had the idea to record a full album, and we start to search for a studio for this purpose. In 2018 we release our demo and that same year we release a single inside the compilate album "Colectivo Sureste Vol.3". At the end of 2018 we come to Ritual prod. In order to start the production of the album. We wrote ten tracks for the album, 3 songs on english, 5 on spanish (our native language) and 2 instrumentals. The album will be available on digital release this Jun 30 and further this year will be release in phisical format by moon records.
Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?
For this album we had three main composers, our string section basically. Manuel Pacheco, Braulio Díaz and Miguel Echeverria. Everyone came with songs and we perform all the musical arrangements together. In the next production we are planning to make all the compose process together to get a better cohesion.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?
The lyrics for this production was wrote by Manuel Pacheco, Braulio Díaz and Abner Balam. We had the idea of telling a story with the songs about an urban legend of a character of our town. A guy who in ancient time was condemn to be skinned alive, and damn for all eternity to don't die and suffer eternally. With the passing of the centuries a god come to him and offer him his freedom in exchange of his loyalty. Because of the long time trapped, our character get mad and now battle inside of his mind for the control of his emotions and actions. A doubt born: Fight in the name of this god and get his freedom back or denied him. Cause he forget him for so many time.
Why the name SKULL METAL ?
This is a funny story, originally we choose the name “Metal Skull” because we love the picture of a skull in the Drumkit and because we play heavy metal it was an obvious decision to use the word on our name. However in our first gig the flyer put our name backward and we like how it sound so we adapted this new name and that’s the beginning of our story.
What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?
Like we say in the first question we have a wide variety of influences from classic heavy metal and bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden to a more melodic death metal and bands like Children of Bodom or Arch Enemy. Everyone in the band have a different taste in music, our bass player prefer classic Heavy Metal, our drummer is a progressive guy, our guitarist love death metal and our vocal it’s a big fan of Spanish heavy metal.
