Hi I’m Jahan and I play guitar in Tiberius. We’re a progressive metal band from Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh.

What’s the story for A PEACEFUL ANNIHILATION ?

The Overall story for the album is one of society’s apathy towards enormous social and political issues. We think the end of humanity won’t all be explosions and fire but more the lack of commitment to issues like climate change, government oppression and out of date societal expectations.

Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?

Usually what happens is Chris (the other guitarist) and I will exchange riffs and song ideas in either Guitar Pro files or small demos until we feel like we have a good basis for a song, we’ll then take this to the rest of the band, Grant will give us some direction of arrangement or sections he needs extended to fit his vocal lines. I’d say the difference between our “original tabs” and our final recorded song is massive, because we record in my home studio, we have the luxury of time to experiment with sounds, textures and different arrangements.

Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?

Lyrics are handled by our vocalist Grant. I would say he is inspired by History, Social and Political issues and obviously the sweet riffs I send him haha!

Why the name TIBERIUS ?

I think everyone wants us to either say James Tiberius Kirk from Star Trek or the Roman Emperor. However, it’s actually a dedication to Grant’s cat who was sadly hit by a car and died. Not quite the “metal” answer you were probably expecting!

What are your personal musical tastes and your influences ?

I think each one of us has a slightly different taste which really lends itself to the creation of our music. There’s quite a lot of overlaps of favourite artists but personally, I’m currently really enjoying the new Long Distance Calling album, Protest the Hero’s ‘Palimpsest’ and Kyros’ ‘Celexa Dreams’.

In studio, what was the atmosphere for your album ?...etc.…

Overall, I’d say pretty electric! To begin with, when you’re staring at an empty studio file with a pile of ten songs to be recording, it’s pretty daunting and it took us quite a bit of motivation to really get going. But once the rhythm section was down and it was a case of getting vocals recorded, the songs really started coming to life and it began to highlight changes in instrumentation to really “lift” the songs, it was exciting!

How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?

All our art is done by Alex ‘Alexhibition’ Spencer. She is incredibly talented and really is the 6th member of Tiberius. She has given our musical journey cohesion through her art. She has driven our van on tour and tends to handle our merch table at shows. If you see her, please say hello and check out her art! The title comes from the outro to ‘Mechanical Messiah’ we all think it sums up the album themes perfectly. The idea of apathy as we walk blindly towards our demise.

How was the shooting of the clip LEVIATHAN ? and why this choice ?

To be honest, there was initially another idea for the video which I won’t tell you about because we plan to re-use this idea for something else. But because of lockdown measures thanks to the infamous Coronavirus, we were forced to replan videos for both Mechanical Messiah and Leviathan. Chris has been desperate to create our music videos in house and this gave him the opportunity to do so. So through the magic of greenscreen, everyday household items and the commissioning of animator Jodie Sech at ‘The Bear and The Stars’ we were able to tell the story of capitalism which is one of the broader themes in the song.

With Management and booking, how do you work ? And with whom ?

Tiberius is completely self represented and unsigned currently and I think we’re quite proud of that. I handle all the management and booking currently, but that doesn’t mean to say we’re not open to working with others.

What are your projects ?

In terms of other bands? For 4 of us, this is our only band currently. Ryan however, is in another band called The Big Wednesday band which is more of a mainstream rock/indie act. I don’t think the rest of us have the time or psychological strength to cope with being in another band!

What's your motto ?

We have two - “Get real weird with it” and “Part of the crew, part of the ship”.
