What’s the story for ASCENSION ?

Ascension is our (Promised Grief) first album. We’ve released an EP way back in 1998, but quitted shortly after to focus on other bands. I’ve been playing together with Benito in Death Metal bands Cremation and Nail of Christ for years.
20 years later Promised Grief started back up en now we’ve released an album with brand new music.

Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?

When PG started again, I wrote all the music.
Benito added some leads and solo’s later on after he joined in. Our original singer couldn’t continue PG, so I ended up singing as well. At the moment it’s only Benito and me, but we will form a complete band again to play live later this year.

Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?

Every song is an epic tale involving dead and misery. Our first single The Velvet Darkness is a classic theme about a vampire who wants to be mortal. The title track Ascension is about someone making wings to fly to heaven to get his dead woman back, ending up dead as well of course. Others songs are about dying soldiers, biblical plaques, Viking funerals. Stuff like that.

Why the name PROMISED GRIEF ?

Our original singer came up with the band name Promised Grief. It sounds cool and fits the atmosphere.

What's your best live memory ? And why ?

As we’re starting up again right in corona times, we haven’t been able to play live with PG. But we will when the situation allows us to do.

In studio, what was the atmosphere for your new album ?...etc.…

We record everything ourselves with our own equipment. That way we don’t have any time pressure and can record whenever we want. We can take all the time we need, which is good for slow doom music :-)

How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?

I’m a professional graphic designer, so besides the music, I also did all the artwork en design myself. Ascension is about a dead woman going to heaven, so basically that’s what the artwork represents, a female angel. Ascension means ‘rise to heaven’, so it fits all together. And as a plus; the album was released on Ascension Day.

How was the shooting of the clip ASCENSION ? and why this choice ?

Because of the lockdowns rules it’s hard to go anywhere. So we edited the video from some home recordings and stock material. It ended up being a bit of a lyric video and a bit of regular video mixed together to tell the tale of Ascension.

What are your projects ?

Besides PG, Benito plays in a death metal band Adapter and in a Iron Maiden coverband Iron Lady. I have a another project called Vicemen, which is a goth/indie outfit.
