What’s the story for TRACES OF HUMAN EXISTENCE ?
We wanted to go different ways to produce this album compared to the other ones. We weren’t up to going in a studio, do the job and let others make the rest. We wanted it as raw and natural as possible. It should sound as if we were playing right in your living room. Loud! And the second goal was to let it sound as much like EXIT as possible. Therefore we did a lot of recordings by ourselves, but we had great people in the background who guided us and gave advice if necessary.
Who composes ?...How does it work in the band ?
I did a lot of composing work in advance. Afterwards, we discussed the stuff together and changed it here and there. Sometimes songs sound good in the composing software but they somehow just don’t work when they are played by a band. Then you need to make some changes or start from scratch. Step by step we developed the songs until we were happy and started the pre-production.
Who writes the texts ?..What are they talking about ?..How does inspiration come ?
The lyrics are all written by me. They show a dark picture of our life these days. In my opinion, too many people do not care about too many issues we should take care of. But this is just my perception.
It is so hard to distinct truth and fake in many aspects of our lives. Leaders of governments and companies lie everyday straight in our face and they get away with this. Obviously the majority of our society is too occupied with themselves to realize what is going on around them. Populism is a threat to our common values because populists accuse instead of discussing based on facts. This makes it very hard for us to solve the real problems that are imminent
Mankind is absolutely incapable of initiating serious changes in terms of climate change, social and economical equality, and so on and on. Maybe due to financial, political or personal reasons, but in the end nothing changes. And that is, at least to me, very concerning.
What's your best live memory ? And why ?
St. Petersburgh in November 2016: We opened for Evil Invaders – very fine people by the way- on a Friday night (or rather: Saturday morning). When we entered the stage at 2 am, the crowd was already total devastated and complete insane. They went crazy with the first beat and it went on like this for the whole show. To me, it could be everyday like this…
In studio, what was the atmosphere for your new album ?...etc.…
It was quite relaxed. We recorded the drum in a club nearby, and did all the guitar and bass tracking at my home. It was a good experience to do this by ourselves, and the cooperation with our producers was very easy as well. We only went to Tony Watzingers studio for the vocal recordings because none of us had a real clue about that. He also worked with me on the vocal parts and helped arrange the vocals.
Rob Hobson did the mix and gave us valuable feedback on the tracks we recorded. And finally Daniel Thabet did the mastering. We were a good crew, we really can recommend these people.
How does it work for the design of the CD ? and why this title ?
I believe, the title summarizes all the lyrics of this album quite well. Traces Of Human Existence will be all that’s left if we move on like this. We build monumental constructions and buildings, sometimes for silly reasons. We spend tons of money for devices that will be useless within a few years, but we are not capable of managing the most demanding problems.
How was the shooting of the clip THE POWER,THE HATE,THE GREED ? and why this choice ?
Some Latvian friends of us produced this video. They came over to Switzerland for a weekend to shoot the band scenes. It was great to hang out with them, and besides work we even found the time to have some fun.
What are your projects ?
To play as much and as soon as possible. We keep our fingers crossed that this COV-19 nightmare will be over soon.
